In the 1906 film, The Mad Motorist, a couple on the run from the police drive over a policeman, who magically recovers seconds after and continues the chase. Soon the couple comes to a building and their car magically drives up the wall and into space. The car drives past stars on clouds, around the Moon, and around the rings of Saturn before crashing through the roof of Handover Courthouse. Since then, there have been countless depictions of flying cars introduced into our imagination.
We live in a world overflowing with dreams and desires—flying cars, perfect lives, endless adventures. Our imaginations soar, and our desires often follow. We often chase after things that sparkle but don’t satisfy. These fanciful ideas fill our hearts with longing, promising fulfillment, yet leaving us restless. But beneath the surface of every desire is a deeper ache—a yearning not for novelty, but for nearness. Not for fantasy, but for faithfulness. Our hearts were never meant to be filled by fleeting things. They were designed to be filled by the eternal.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4
In this verse, the Psalmist isn’t giving us a promise that God will grant every wish. It is an invitation to realignment. When we delight in Him, our desires begin to shift. They become less about what dazzles and more about what endures. Less about self, more about surrender.
Augustine once wrote, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.” God doesn’t condemn our creativity or our dreams;
He simply invites us to anchor them in Him. When our desires are aligned with His will, they become not distractions, but reflections of divine purpose.
So today, let’s pause. Let’s ask: What am I truly longing for? And let’s remember that the heart’s truest desire is not found in fantasy—but in the Father.
